Betting on Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with Casumo

Modern cricket and its finances necessitate boards to have domestic T20 tournaments to generate more income and stay afloat. No cricketing authorities, especially those from smaller nations, can survive without the monies that the glamour and excitement of local T20 events.

This is why the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also been staging a T20 tournament of its own for almost a decade now. It’s called the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

The BPL has undergone many changes over the years, so much so that none of its participants have a set way of being. That makes the job of gamblers a bit trickier but also more fun.

The BPL is one of those leagues that have been disrupted by the pandemic. It wasn’t staged in 2020 and won’t be happening this year either, although a date is set for 2022. Despite that, we at Casumo, give the league its due share of attention, and whenever a BPL tourney is on, its betting markets are hosted on our website.

BPL – how it started, where it is

The BPL’s story is not unlike many of its peers’, with some highs and some lows – the latter mostly financial and organizational. It all started in 2012 when the BCB wanted to revitalize its cricketing ecosystem with an injection of both talent as well as money. Out went the outdated National Cricket League Twenty20 and in came the BPL.

The norm for T20 leagues is to begin with a group of six – unless of course you’re really, really big time a la the Indian Premier League. For the mere mortals, that number remains at or under six, and it was just that when the BPL first kicked off. But over the years, the BPL has at times also had seven participants – a number it currently maintains.

The league’s founding franchises in 2012 were Duronto Rajshahi, Khulna Royal Bengals, Dhaka Gladiators, Barisal Burners, Chittagong Kings and Sylhet Royals. Since then, Barisal vanished in 2017, while Rangpur Rangers and Cumilla Warriors were inducted in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

Several rounds of rebranding, additions and subtractions later, the septet that are left and played the tournament’s last edition in 2019 are Dhaka Platoon, Cumilla Warriors, Rajshahi Royals, Rangpur Rangers, Chattogram Challengers, Khulna Tigers and Sylhet Thunder.

Most of the franchises that took part in BPL season one already do not look anything like they were at the start of their journey and they could look even more different by the time the next tournament is played. That’s because BCB’s deal with the franchise owners ended in 2019 and an agreement over renewal could not be made. Therefore, the BCB took matters in its own hands and staged the entire 2019 tournament by itself and without any outside ownership involved.

In the long run, though, the BCB will need to sell its franchises, and when that happens, another round of rebranding, name changes and what not are not out of question.

BPL 2022 from betting perspective

As with most T20 leagues around the world, BPL, receives its share of format specialists from the Caribbean. Whichever franchise lands the best combination of men from the West Indies, tends to do better than others. Thus, before the start of any given BPL season, it is always wise to find out which teams have names such as Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and others. These Calypsos can decide games on their own and within a short period of time.

Like the West Indies stars, the ones from Pakistan, too, are difference makers and their familiarity with the conditions make them useful. Pay special attention to the sides that land the likes of Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik. Even the lesser known gems such as Azam Khan could come in handy.

Bangladesh superstar Shakib Al Hasan is a two-time BPL champion and has been named the tournament’s best player on three separate occasions. He and his franchise from Dhaka almost always content for the title as well.

That said, the next edition of the tournament is still more than six months away and no one has any idea how it would look under new owners and after a two-year break. Casumo will expand upon the general tips and guides mentioned above once the tournament has taken shape so watch this space. Keep in mind that BPL 2022 is expected to be held from January 14, 2022 till February 28, 2022.
