But besides our Nordic friends, what other traditions and celebrations are out there? Well, we did a bit of online researching and here’s what we found!
May Day 2020 in the USA
Sadly this has become a bit of a forgotten tradition over time, but in some parts of the United States, people used to celebrate May Day by creating colourful ‘May baskets’. They were small baskets filled with flowers and gifts, left at the front door of a friend, family member or someone they’d admire.
We’re so up for bringing this super cute tradition back to life!
May Day 2020 in Italy
At the ancient festival of Calendimaggio in Assisi (La Festa di Calendimaggio), people dress up in traditional wear and there’s a variety of activities to participate in, including horseback riding, crossbow-shooting competitions and the election of a Madonna Primavera (Spring Queen). May Day 2020 in Bulgaria
On May Day, Bulgarians celebrate Irminden, a holiday which is associated with snakes and lizards and the rituals undertaken to protect the people from them. It’s said that during the days around Easter, snakes come out of their burrows, and on Irminden, their king comes out. Many people used to believe that those working in the fields on this day would be bitten by a snake, so in western Bulgaria people light fires and make noises to scare the snakes away.
May Day 2020 in France
A typical French tradition is to give the Lily of the Valley flower to your friends, lovers and family. This actually dates all the way back to 1561, when Charles IX presented Lily of the Valley to all the ladies present at his court.
