Basketball and the NBA: A UK Guide to Watching and Betting

Basketball is fast. A team can go from ten points down to ten points up in the time it takes to make a cup of tea. Scores change every 20 seconds or so, the last two minutes can take half an hour, and a single shot at the buzzer can decide a season.

For UK fans, the NBA is the main event, with its biggest games landing in the small hours. But there's more to it than night-owl viewing. Weekend afternoon tip-offs in the US arrive in the UK evening, the Christmas Day games are a festive tradition for plenty of households, and there's a growing domestic scene with the Super League Basketball and European competitions too.

This guide explains the rules, how the NBA season builds towards the Finals, when games air in the UK and where to watch them, and how basketball betting works at Casumo for adults who fancy adding a pick to the action.

Basketball Explained for New Viewers

Five players per team on court. A hoop 10 feet off the ground at each end. Put the ball through the hoop more often than the other team and you win. There are no draws: if it's level at the end, you play overtime until someone's ahead.

How points are scored

  • Two points: Any basket scored from inside the three-point line, including layups and dunks.
  • Three points: A basket from beyond the three-point arc. In the NBA, it's 23 feet 9 inches away at the top and 22 feet in the corners.
  • One point: Each successful foul shot, taken from the line after certain fouls. You'll hear these called "shots from the line" on UK commentary.

The three-point shot has transformed the game over the last decade. Teams now take far more threes than they used to, which is why NBA scores routinely reach 110 to 130 points per team.

Quarters and the clock

NBA games have four quarters of 12 minutes. International (FIBA) games and European leagues use four quarters of 10 minutes. The clock stops when the ball goes out of play, for fouls and for timeouts, so a 48-minute game takes much longer in real time. Overtime periods last five minutes.

There's also a shot clock: in the NBA, a team has 24 seconds to attempt a shot that hits the rim. Run out of time and possession passes to the other team. This keeps the pace high and stops teams stalling.

Fouls

Illegal contact is a foul. A player fouled while shooting gets shots from the line: two if they were attempting a two-pointer, three for a three-pointer, or one extra if the shot went in anyway (an "and-one"). Each player can commit six fouls in an NBA game before they "foul out" and must leave the game. Once a team commits a set number of fouls in a quarter, every further foul sends the opponent to the line, which is why late-game fouling becomes a tactic.

Violations

A few rules that new viewers notice:

  • Travelling: Taking too many steps without dribbling.
  • Double dribble: Dribbling, stopping, then dribbling again.
  • Backcourt violation: Taking the ball back over the halfway line once you've crossed it.
  • Goaltending: Blocking a shot on its way down towards the basket. The basket counts.
  • Three seconds: Standing in the painted area under the basket for more than three seconds.

Why the last two minutes take forever

New viewers are often baffled by how long the end of a close game lasts. Here's why. Each team has several timeouts, and coaches save them for the finish to draw up plays. Trailing teams foul deliberately to stop the clock and send opponents to the line, hoping they miss. Officials review close calls on video. And after a made basket in the final two minutes, the clock stops. Two minutes on the clock can easily take 15 to 20 minutes of real time. It's frustrating if you're waiting for bed, and brilliant if the game's close.

Positions

Traditional positions are point guard (the playmaker who runs the offence), shooting guard, small forward, power forward and centre (usually the tallest player, protecting the basket). Modern basketball is much more flexible, and you'll hear coaches talk about "positionless" basketball, where players switch roles constantly.

Basketball terms you'll hear on commentary

  • Pick and roll: A player sets a screen for the ball handler, then rolls towards the basket for a pass. The most common play in basketball.
  • Fast break: Racing up the court before the defence is set.
  • Rebound: Collecting the ball after a missed shot. Offensive rebounds give a team a second chance.
  • Assist: A pass that leads directly to a basket.
  • Turnover: Losing the ball to the opposition through a bad pass, a steal or a violation.
  • And-one: Scoring while being fouled, earning an extra shot from the line.
  • Triple-double: A player reaching double figures in three categories, usually points, rebounds and assists.
  • Garbage time: The end of a one-sided game, when the result is settled and the starters sit down.
  • Clutch: The final five minutes of a close game, when every possession counts.

How long will you be watching?

An NBA game takes about two hours and 15 minutes from tip-off to final buzzer. Close games stretch longer, because the final two minutes are full of timeouts, fouls and video reviews. Play-off games can run closer to three hours.

The NBA Season

How the league is set up

The NBA has 30 teams in two conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, with 15 teams each. Every team plays 82 regular-season games, starting in late October and finishing in mid-April.

Rivalries and history

Some NBA rivalries go back decades. The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have met in the Finals more than any other pairing, and the two franchises have won more championships than anyone else. The Knicks and Celtics, the Lakers and Clippers (who share an arena city) and the Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers all carry real edge. Rivalries also form in the play-offs, where teams meet up to seven times in two weeks and the tension builds from game to game.

The NBA Cup

Since 2023, the NBA has run an in-season tournament, now called the NBA Cup. Group games take place in November, with the knockout rounds in December and the semi-finals and final played in Las Vegas. It's a trophy in its own right, and the group games count towards the regular-season standings too.

All-Star Weekend and the Draft

All-Star Weekend in February is the NBA's showpiece break, with the slam dunk contest, the three-point contest and an All-Star Game featuring the league's best players, voted for by fans, players and media. It's entertainment more than competition, and the dunk contest is worth staying up for at least once.

The NBA Draft takes place after the Finals in June. Teams take turns to pick the best young players from US colleges and leagues around the world, with the worst teams given the best odds in a lottery for the top picks. Draft night can reshape a franchise's future.

The Play-In and the play-offs

The top six teams in each conference qualify directly for the play-offs. Teams finishing seventh to tenth enter the Play-In Tournament, a mini knockout that decides the final two play-off spots in each conference. The play-offs themselves are four rounds of best-of-seven series, culminating in the NBA Finals in June between the Eastern and Western champions.

The NBA year at a glance

  • Late October: Regular season tips off

  • November to December: NBA Cup group games and knockouts

  • 25 December: Christmas Day games

  • January: NBA game in Europe (London or elsewhere, varies by season)

  • February: All-Star Weekend

  • Mid-April: End of the regular season, then the Play-In

  • Late April to May: Play-offs

  • June: NBA Finals, followed by the NBA Draft

UK tip-off times

Most NBA games start between 7pm and 10:30pm local US time, which means midnight to 3:30am in the UK. Weekend afternoon games in the US are the exception, landing in the UK evening, often around 8pm to 9pm. The Christmas Day slate starts in the UK late afternoon and runs into the early hours. Finals games usually tip off around 1:30am UK time.

Stats worth understanding

Box scores are packed with numbers. A few help you see what's really going on. Field goal percentage shows shooting efficiency, but true shooting percentage is better because it includes threes and shots from the line. Pace tells you how many possessions a team uses per game, which drives scoring totals. Offensive and defensive rating measure points scored and conceded per 100 possessions, a fairer comparison than raw points. Plus-minus shows how a team did while a particular player was on court. Stats explain what happened. They don't promise what happens next.

Watching the NBA from the UK

Most UK fans watch a mix of live and recorded games. Condensed replays on League Pass cut a game down to around 10 to 15 minutes, keeping every possession but skipping the stoppages. Full replays are available the next morning. If you're avoiding spoilers, turn off sports notifications before bed and mute team names on social media. Weekend evening games and the Christmas Day slate are the easiest way to watch live without losing sleep.

Basketball Beyond the NBA

EuroLeague is Europe's top club competition, featuring big clubs from Spain, Greece, Turkey, Serbia, Italy and beyond, with the season ending at a Final Four weekend in May. FIBA runs international basketball, including the Basketball World Cup and EuroBasket, and basketball is one of the most-watched sports at the Olympics.

In the UK, Super League Basketball (SLB) is the top domestic league, with teams in cities including London, Sheffield, Manchester, Glasgow and Leicester. Matches are affordable, the atmosphere is friendly, and it's an easy way to see live professional basketball without flying to the US.

The WNBA is the US women's professional league, played from May to October, and coverage in the UK has expanded in recent years.

Where to Watch the NBA in the UK

Sky Sports shows a selection of live NBA games every week across the regular season and play-offs, under a long-term deal linked to NBCUniversal's US rights.

Prime Video has a large package of regular-season games, including Thursday and Friday doubleheaders, NBA Cup knockout games, a share of play-off games and a Conference Finals series in some years. Prime Video was the UK home of the NBA Finals in 2026.

NBA League Pass is the league's own streaming service, carrying almost every game live and on demand, with condensed replays that are perfect for UK viewers who'd rather sleep through the live action.

Rights arrangements can change between seasons, especially for the Finals, so check listings before a big series.

Watching with other fans

Late tip-offs make NBA viewing parties tricky in the UK, but fan groups for popular teams do organise screenings for Finals games and Christmas Day. Basketball bars in London and other big cities show weekend evening games, and SLB teams sometimes host screenings for big NBA nights. It's a friendly scene and a good place to pick up the finer points from people who've been watching for years.

Watching Basketball in Person

NBA games in Europe

The NBA has staged regular-season games in London for years, usually at The O2 in January, and has expanded its European schedule to other cities too. Tickets go fast. Sign up for NBA and venue alerts in advance, and buy only through official partners.

SLB and British basketball

For regular live basketball in the UK, a Super League Basketball game is hard to beat for value. Tickets are usually bought online or on the door, arenas are compact, and you'll be close enough to hear the coaches. Many teams play in venues with good public transport links, which makes for an easy evening out.

A trip to the US

If you're planning a trip to see an NBA game in the US, popular teams' tickets can be expensive and sell quickly, so book early. Arenas operate strict bag policies and are cashless. Arrive in time for warm-ups, when players shoot around close to the stands.

Basketball Betting Explained

Basketball's high scores make it a natural fit for points-based markets. Here's how the main ones work.

Moneyline, spread and totals

  • Moneyline: Which team will win the game, including overtime.
  • Point Spread (Handicap): The favourite gives up points and the underdog receives them. A team at -7.5 must win by eight or more.
  • Totals (Over/Under): The combined points scored by both teams. A line of 228.5 means you're betting on whether the total will be 229 or more, or 228 or fewer.

Why lines move

Spreads and totals often shift during the day before tip-off. The biggest reason in the NBA is team news: when a star is ruled out or listed as questionable, prices react quickly. Rest decisions on the second night of back-to-back games can be announced late, sometimes only an hour or so before the game. If you're looking at markets for a midnight or 1am tip-off, the late injury report is worth a check before you settle on anything.

Player markets

  • Player Points: Over or under a line for a named player's points.
  • Rebounds and Assists: Over or under lines for individual players.
  • Points, Rebounds and Assists (PRA): All three combined.
  • Three-Pointers Made: How many threes a player scores.

If a player doesn't take part, player markets are usually void. Check the rules for each market.

Quarter and half markets

You can bet on individual quarters or halves: which team wins the first quarter, the total points in the first half, and so on. These settle on that period alone. Overtime is not included in quarter or half markets.

Settlement: overtime counts

For full-game markets, overtime is usually included. A game that's level after four quarters and decided in overtime will settle with the overtime points counted. This is different from many football markets, so it's worth remembering.

Futures and awards

Season-long markets include the NBA Championship, conference winners, the NBA Cup, and individual awards such as Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year. Prices move with injuries, trades and form across the season.

What shapes a basketball game

Injury reports and late player news matter a lot in the NBA, as star players sometimes rest to manage workload, especially on the second night of back-to-back games. Travel and schedule density play a part too. Pace (how many possessions a team uses per game) has a big influence on totals. None of this guarantees an outcome: a hot shooting night can upend any prediction.

In-play basketball betting

Live basketball markets update constantly as scores change. Runs of points can swing the odds sharply in a couple of minutes. Set your limit before tip-off, and be extra careful with late-night games, when tiredness can affect judgement.
