Championship Betting: Latest Odds & Match Previews

The Championship is one of the more exciting football events on the yearly calendar. Part of what makes this event so thrilling is the fact that this is actually the second tier of English football. This means that there's a lot riding on the outcome of individual games and the tournament as a whole. Perform well, and the team can actually be promoted to the Premier League. Perform badly and the team is relegated further.

Championship Betting Odds

When looking at Championship betting odds, you do need to stay on top of everything that is happening. This is because the competition is so incredibly unpredictable that one team can suddenly become favourites. With the odds changing rapidly at times during the tournament, you do need to stay on top of it all. Happily, for you, Casumo always has the latest and most competitive Championship odds on the market.

Of course, a common aim within this tournament is to predict which team will win individual matches and also the tournament overall. However, this is a very competitive league and there are often no clear favourites to be found. This can make it significantly harder to actually place an accurate bet. But then again, this does add some fun.

Luckily, you don't just have to place bets on the winner of an event in this tournament. There are actually a number of other bets available within a single game. For instance, you can bet on which team will score first, which player will score a goal and so on.

However, as with all bets, you do need to have a good grounding in the general form of each team. It is a good idea to keep abreast of the action after each game. You can also check out tipsters to see what they think. We also offer match previews complete with our expert opinions, which can also help to inform your betting choices.

Unlike other competitions though, betting earlier in the season doesn't guarantee better odds. Things fluctuate rapidly in the Championship, so really you just need to be prepared for anything.

Championship Playoffs explained

When it comes to betting on football, it's really important to know what the Championship playoffs are all about. This is because they're actually one of the most lucrative and exciting parts of English football, across all tiers. The outcome of these playoffs has huge importance — there's a place in the Premier League at stake!

This exciting event actually takes place once the league phase has ended. So, it actually makes a mini-tournament at the end, bookending what is often a very compelling season of football. With only one team advancing, there's a lot to play for.

The first and second place teams automatically qualify for a promotion to the Premier League, but the third to sixth-placed teams are the ones that enter these knockout playoffs. There's a merit system used to pair the teams for each of these knockout games. So third plays sixth, and fourth plays fifth. The winners of each of these games then progress to a final. This winner can then claim the third promotion spot and move up to the Premier League.

What's even more exciting is that the Premier League actually gives £100 million to the promoted team. This means that these knockout rounds are hotly contested making it a truly exciting end-of-season feature.

In-Play Championship Betting

One of the interesting features available on Casumo is the option for in-play or live betting. This type of betting gives you the chance to bet on games that are actually happening in real-time. Of course, it is also possible to place bets before kick-off, but the interesting part of live betting is that bets can actually be finalized and cashed out part way through a game.

This means that instead of waiting for the end of a game, in-play betting lets players quit when they feel their bet has paid out what they are looking for. This type of betting does mean that the odds aren't quite as competitive as normal betting, but the fact that you can choose when to end it does swing things for this type of bet.

One massive reason for in-play betting is that you can place such a bet to cover potential losses you may have. For example, you can place a bet on one team in the normal manner and then bet on the opposite team via in-play betting. Doing this will mean you cover any possible loss.

As you can cash out early, you can also make a decision as soon as things start to change — either for better or worse. At Casumo, we have in-play betting for all Championship games.

Championship Promotion Betting & Outrights

One of the most common types of bets in the Championship is outright bets. This is a bet on which team will win the competition outright. It does not mean who will win in a match.

For an outright bet, odds are set on each of the teams within the Championship. Before the event starts, these odds are based on the current and recent form of each team. This can mean that some teams will have better odds than you might expect at the start of the tournament.

While it can be really beneficial to place an outright bet before the tournament starts, you can still place an outright bet throughout the tournament too. However, if you're able to look at the form of each team beforehand, you are going to get better odds pre-tournament. As the tournament continues, the odds on outright bets will change dramatically as bookies are able to see the current form for each team.

Of course, this may end up for the better for you, but it can also turn out worse.

Championship Winner Odds

As we've mentioned, this is a hugely competitive league. But, there are always some standout teams to look at. Often, better odds are given to the teams recently relegated from the Premier League. This is because they're often still a little bit better skilled than those who have not been promoted.

But, these odds are constantly changing as other teams may have improved and be eager to get promoted to the big league. Because of this, not only can you bet on winners in the Championship, but you can also place bets on the teams you think will be relegated at the end of the season. Sometimes, these Championship relegation odds are actually more stable and easier to predict than the winners.

Championship Derbies

When we take a look at Derbies, there are a lot of them in English football. Derbies are some of the biggest rivalries between teams that take place within the event. These usually take place between two local rivals — they can be from the same city or region of England or Wales. While these should, technically, be played in a similar way to any other games, these derbies usually are of great import to both the team and the fans alike as they strive to beat their opponents.

The Championship has a number of these, with some of the biggest teams fighting it out to reign supreme. As the Championship does change relatively rapidly, not all of the main derbies remain within the Championship. On some occasions, these derbies actually transcend the tiers with the biggest rivals for a Championship team sitting in the Premier League.

For instance, Leeds, despite often being relegated, still considers their biggest rivals to be Chelsea and Manchester United, both of whom tend to stay firmly in the Premier League. However, Leeds does move up and down regularly through these two leagues keeping these rivalries very much alive.

Another big one is Bristol City versus Bristol Rovers. With both teams coming from the same city, this matchup often leads to some pretty heated and intense games. Again though, depending on the year and the form of each team, they're not always in the same league.

A current ongoing rivalry is another close couple of teams. This intense pairing is Derby City and Nottingham Forest. Excitingly, these two teams do tend to remain together in the Championship, so fans can enjoy some really exciting games when these two clash.

Some of the other fun matchups to keep an eye out for include:

  • Ipswich Town v Norwich City

  • Cardiff v Swansea

  • Millwall v West Ham United

  • Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday

As relegations and promotions are common, these teams don't always face each other in a given season. But, given the importance of when they do, it's a good idea to know when they do occur.
